Sally Hansen Calypso Blue

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Calypso Blue is a gorgeous sheer dark turquoise with aqua shimmer. Am I using these colors correctly? I think of aqua as containing more green than turquoise as more blue... I should really look these things up before I post about them!

It's a really sheer polish so I decided to layer it over two different colors to see if it would affect how it looks.

First, I layered it over China Glaze Caribbean Blue because I thought it would give the polish more depth. I really like how it came out. Caribbean Blue gave the layering color a great base, so the polish below looks like Calypso Blue is opaque on its own instead of layered. I also like how the names are both tropical!

This is me trying to do an artistic, graceful pose. FAIL.

Since the polish has a strong green shimmer, I decided to layer it over a green, Sally Hansen Green Tea, a dusty minty medium green. It changed the background color to a lighter bluish green and the shimmer is more apparent. I think I like it over the green better!

Which do you prefer - the green or blue underwear? Or do you just like Sally Hansen Calypso Blue regardless of what it's layered over?

  1. This is beautiful! I always pass these up in the store because I'm not a fan of the brushes but this one deserves a second look! Love it!

  2. I think of them opposite - as aqua being more blue and turq being more green. But I see things called turq in all ranges. I think my mind set comes from aquamarine (as in the birthstone) has only a clear blue shade, while turquoise stones look more green unless you get some great sky blue turq like Sleeping Beauty or old age Persian turq. Did not know Calypso was sheer. I had picked up the bottle in the store and looked at it but put it back. I have trouble wearing most of these from sky/powder blues on through aquas - has to get into a real teal polish (like Sally Hason Fairy Teal (or thinking of the teal in this fall's China Glaze collection) before I can wear em. Odd as I can wear clothing in sky blue/aqua/teals of all shades..just next to my hands/feet they look like lobsters. I am so drawn to these kinds of shades and always so sad they look so ick on me. I think I have tried maybe 10 different ones in this range and more than that in the powder blues...I need to clean out out of my stash and move 'em along to donation. I am by the way a HUGE fan of the SH Complete Salon Formula brush - seems ya either love it or hate it. I think that line makes an amazing cream...just I could do with a smaller bottle for the price. Like Orly, it's nearly never I would get through a full bottle of either..but then I only have been through a full bottle of about 4 shades in my life before I move along to new passions.

  4. This is actually one of my favorite colors and one of the few Sally Hansen's I've held on to. I use Calypso on it's own, and seldom layer it.

    1. I should try it but it seems too sheer to wear on it's own. I have short nail beds that I try to cover with polish!
