New Nail Polish Remover

I think I must live under a rock. I was going through my Google Reader the other day and was reading a post by Sarah at Chalkboard Nails and she mentioned something about a glycerin+acetone mix to remove her polish.

Whazzat you ask?

Well, a lot of people swear by Zoya Remove+ Polish Remover, which apparently is basically acetone + glycerin + fragrance + color. Loodie Loodie Loodie has a great post explaining how to make your own (much cheaper!) and has a neat video to show you what it looks like when you mix it, which I've included below.

By the way, she is HI-LARIOUS and I'm sure once you check out her link and see another post or two you'll subscribe immediately because she's witty and her posts are fun to read! PLUS she's got some awesome posts on acetone, nail hardeners, and other good stuff to know that I found super helpful - and you will probably too!

Anywho, I bought some glycerin at the store, used my small acetone bottle and whipped up a batch. LOVE. I used it to remove some polish and I didn't get that awful dry, white skin around my nails that I get with pure acetone, and I didn't get any crazy hangnails/peeling skin afterward either! How did I not know about this stuff sooner?!? In case any of you out there were under the proverbial rock with me, I thought I'd share!

I found glycerin at Walmart in the pharmacy section, but they carry it at most grocery and drug stores. Although, I went to Kroger first and asked about it, and the clerk came back with glycerin suppositories.

Awkward.

I then tried explaining what I was going to do with it, and why a glycerin suppository wouldn't work. I don't think she believed me.

I did a little searching and you can use glycerin for lots of other things - mainly as a moisturizing agent. I wet my hands and put a few drops in my palm and massaged it into my hands and cuticles after I removed that polish and my skin is so soft now! I don't think it's better or worse than regular lotion, but if you have sensitive skin, you may like this. And you don't use much glycerin for the remover recipe, so I'm trying to find other uses for all this extra I have!

I did read somewhere you can use a drop or two with plain water and use it as a facial moisturizer, which is good for sensitive and acne prone skin, since it's also anti-bacterial and non-comedogenic. I think I'm going to have to try this!

Have ya'll used this mixture for polish removal? Any tips or tricks?

  1. You can also use it as a mixing medium for making dry shadows wet! All you need to do is mix 1 part glycerin to 3 parts water. Another use for it :-) That is so funny about the suppositories, haha!

  4. Ahh maybe. Or maybe a bit more water would have worked. I dunno. I really like it! Let me know how the facial moisturizer goes....And that would have been an interesting how to video. And labels!
