Julep Kylie

I got my May Julep Maven box in Friday! I'm an American Beauty, so my box contained Kylie, Ellie, a polish magnet, and The Best Pedi Prep Ever with a foot file. I'm not sure what I think about Ellie, but I'm intrigued by the pedi combo, and I tore into Kylie already!

Disclaimer: This is the first time I've used a magnetic polish. I do have three China Glaze Magnetic polishes, but I got them and then sort of set them aside. I still hadn't used a magnetic polish until this one. I think I may be addicted, but I also think I suck at it.

Julep Kylie is described as a "sultry violet magnetic polish." The magnet that came with it is kinda fun, it's got a handle! I do have the China Glaze magnet that has more designs, so I may see if that one is any better...

I really like it. It didn't seem to create a really sharp line, and what it did create blurred after a few minutes, although the light streaks were still apparent. The color alone is great, it's more of a medium purple shimmer, and when you get the magnetic design, it becomes more red-toned and the light design is shimmery and the darker color is more creme. This is one base coat and one coat to do the design and no top coat. I wasn't planning on keeping it on long, I was playing while I was hanging with the hubby, but I may redo it and see if I can get a sharper design.

I didn't realize this until I had it on my nails, but it has a sort of 3D effect. Have you ever seen one of those tiger eye stones? With all the wavy shimmery lines of brown and tan? That's what this looks like! It's really neat and definitely cooler than I was expecting.

I know there is a certain finesse to doing magnetic designs, and I'm not quite sure I've mastered it. But I am going to refer back to Scrangie's great post on magnetic blunders and see if I can do something a little better!

  1. I quickly became addicted to my China Glaze Magnetix polishes too :) Lol I noticed the 3D effect too and kept getting distracted moving my nails around!

  2. I actually ordered a set of three magnets and a finger rest of eBay for about $1. The magnet is really strong and creates a really clear line, plus it has three patterns - lines, waves and a super star.

  6. I think this looks awesome! I see what you mean about the red tones too! I have a Claire's Magnetix and I can't get it to come out with sharp, straight lines either, but practising should help me out, I guess.

    1. Yeah I've got to work on my magnet usage to get better. I think I'm a little shaky.

  7. I haven't quite decided whether I like the idea of magnetic polishes yet. I think they need to start making duo-coloured ones, where the pigment that is raised by the magnet is a different colour to the base. I'd be all over that!

    1. ooh that does sound cool! I think color club magnetic polishes almost do that.

  8. If all magnetic polishes were like this, I'd be flailing. I bought a couple Nabi ones from Walgreens, and I couldn't get them to work right at all. I did finally get my Julep box today, and it looked awesome. The only issue I have right now? I seriously fractured one of my nails, and had to cut ALL of my nails down to nubbins.

...there goes my 52 Week Mani challenge attempt.

  12. I have a Layla magnetic polish in Golden Bronze and it looks *exactly* like tiger's eye stone when I have it on. It's awesome, one of those polishes where you can't talk to anybody without them grabbing your hand to check out your mani, haha.

  18. I think you did great! I don't own a magnetic nail polish, but I think I'd suck at it. My nail art designs are also just so-so. I would love to have something as beautiful as this on my nails!
